This year’s theme for Global Recycling Day is Recycling Heroes, which aims to recognise people, places and activities and showcase how recycling contributes to an environmentally stable planet and a greener future for all. So, what better occasion than this to celebrate our recycling efforts here at Reflex…
Last year, the team at our Boston site were busy working on our Group recycling initiatives, in which several different waste materials were collected and sent off to recycling centres when no longer needed.
A total of 39 collections, totalling 1507 tonnes, were arranged for glassine liner, a smooth and glossy air and water-resistant paper, which is estimated to have saved our customers up to £155,550 in landfill tax before collection and around £223,000 after collection (based on HMRC Landfill Tax at a rate of £103.70 per tonne and average collection from waste companies of ~ £45 per tonne). This material would have been sent to a UK based recycling centre where the silicon is removed from the material to access the paper fibres, which are then turned into newspaper print paper, animal bedding, shredded paper packaging and much more.
A collection was also arranged for PET plastic, totalling 74 tonnes.
To assist with recycling initiatives at Boston, a bailer and weighing pallet truck have now been purchased and installed, creating a dedicated area on site to collate and compact material into large bales and enabling the team to be more efficient in storing and returning material.
A huge thanks goes to the team at Boston for their hard work in facilitating this initiative, and we look forward to crunching the numbers for 2025 and making an even bigger impact!
